The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA (CME) has welcomed the WA Government’s extension of its deadline for workers to complete the examination to become statutory position holders.
The move comes after CME’s calls for WorkSafe to extend the transition period due to industry demand for examinations exceeding the capacity of the department to deliver within the set timeframe.
CME Chief Executive, Rebecca Tomkinson, said WorkSafe’s 12-month extension of the transition period from 30 March 2025 to 30 March 2026 is a practical solution that allows statutory position holders to access the examinations they need to fulfil their obligations.
“Throughout the rollout of these examinations, CME has engaged in ongoing discussions with WorkSafe to extend the 2025 deadline due to the high number of people required to sit the exam,” Ms Tomkinson said.
“The new Work Health and Safety laws require people with specific roles and functions at mining operations to have the necessary knowledge and competency requirements to maintain safety standards within the industry.
“These qualifications include successfully completing an examination to demonstrate understanding of the new Work Health and Safety laws as well as role-specific content.
“Today’s announcement provides certainty to the sector and enables planning to ensure the workers who need to obtain these qualifications can do so,” she said.
