Emergency Response Teams Put to the Test

Mine rescue teams from across the Goldfields will converge on Coolgardie at the weekend to put their emergency response skills to the ultimate test.

The 2014 Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition is proudly hosted by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME), the state’s peak resources representative body.

CME Chief Executive Howard-Smith said the competition provides an ideal training environment for teams to compare and test their skills.

“The competition is designed to test teams with simulated emergency situations reflecting real life hazards within the resource industry,” said Mr Howard-Smith.

Held on May 2-3, seven teams will compete in nine challenging events including team skills, confined space rescue, fire-fighting, vehicle extrication, rope rescue, hazardous chemicals, first aid, incident management scenario and a theory assessment.

The participating teams are:

  • La Mancha Resources
  • Gold Fields St Ives
  • MMG Golden Grove
  • Norton Gold Fields
  • Northern Star Resources
  • KCGM (Two teams)

Each team hopes to be the winner of an event and ultimately the ‘Best Team Overall’, challenged by the 2013 winner, Barrick Kanowna (now Northern Star Resources).

CME would like to acknowledge the use of the Focus Minerals operations and the significant event contribution from local businesses connected to the resources industry.

Media are welcome to participate in a tour of the competition events with Mine Rescue Committee Chair, Tim Campbell on Saturday 3 May 2014.

The tour will depart at 12.30pm (sharp) from the CME Office, 115 Egan Street, Kalgoorlie. Steel cap boots, long pants and long sleeves are essential. Cameras and filming equipment are welcome.
