All systems go in the South West

There was a stellar turnout at the South West Regional Council meeting held at the CME’s Bunbury office on June 1.

At the meeting, CME Manager – Health, Safety and People Laila Nowell provided an authoritative overview of the new Workplace Health and Safety laws that took effect from March 31.  Laila also updated members on the mining industry’s alcohol standard unveiled on May 23, as well as CME and Lifeline WA’s ongoing Resourceful Mind Program.

CME Acting Chief Executive Rob Carruthers offered an insightful summary of the new Federal Labor Government and its Cabinet, while CME State regional manager Susan Cull briefed members on CME’s incoming Chief Executive Rebecca Tomkinson.

May was another busy month for CME South West Regional Officer Jason Mennell, whose highlights included a visit to Iluka’s rehabilitated Tutunup South Mineral Sands Mine. Indistinguishable from its immediate surroundings, it is hard to believe the 190-hectare parcel of land south of Capel was a bustling mining hub just five years ago.

Jason also attended a press briefing on Albemarle’s plans to ramp up its lithium hydroxide plant Kemerton (picture above).  Albemarle also outlined plans that will see it consulting with residents and stakeholders as it looks to ease the region’s housing crunch woes by potentially building a 1000-person workers’ accommodation village at Binningup.
