CME South West regional officer Jason Mennell caught up with Talison Lithium recently to hear more about the lithium miner’s stellar contribution to the region’s bushfire-fighting efforts earlier in the year. Talison’s contribution was given a nod of appreciation by the State Government at the end of June via a Certificate of Distinction from State Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson. Meanwhile, Rio Tinto recently marked 15 years in the South West since its inaugural FIFO chartered flight out of the seaside town with a glitzy celebration in Busselton on August 25.
Although Rio has no mining operations in the South West, the company’s presence in the region through its near 1300-strong FIFO workforce has seen the company establish a community funding arrangement and an office on Busselton’s main street. As well as the injection of cash into the region from salaries earned at its iron ore operations, Rio’s direct financial contribution to South West not-for-profits is a lifeblood to many community organisations. Stakeholders heard about some of the contributions Rio had made to these groups at the celebration.
CME co-hosted a well-attended breakfast at the Quality Lighthouse Motel in late July for Bunbury’s business community. The breakfast was an opportunity for South32 to outline its plans for its bauxite mine near Boddington. That could extend Worsley Alumina’s operations near Collie for a further 15 years.
