The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) gazetted the 2021/22 schedule of fees and charges for mining and petroleum legislation.
The new fee schedule came into effect on 1 July 2021 and sees significant increases to all fee categories, which were not flagged with industry prior to gazettal.
DMIRS media releases indicate that the additional revenue arising from these increases is to contribute to:
- Increases to the Exploration Incentive Scheme
- Addressing resourcing deficiencies in processing the backlog of mining tenement applications
- Increase funding for Minerals Research Institute of WA (MRIWA)
CME awaits further detail in the upcoming State budget to confirm the proposed allocation of expenditure. It is critical that any additional revenue and resourcing is directed to address known constraints in assessment and approval processes, and directly supports realisation of the current growth in resources sector activities.
CME continues to strongly advocate to government on these issues and will be monitoring the collective increase in the cost of doing business in WA.
Aboriginal Cultural Heritage
CME continues to engage with government in the development of a revised draft Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Bill. Introduction of a Bill into Parliament is expected in September 2021.
In preparation, CME will be attending the planned August stakeholder forum for a formal update on ongoing amendments to proposed legislation, alongside major stakeholders of the Bill including prescribed bodies corporate and other industry peak bodies.
CME’s Native Title Aboriginal Heritage Working Group continues to work through implications of changes to proposed legislation ahead of introduction later this year and will be meeting shortly after the planned August stakeholder meeting.
