First regional skills summit held in Bunbury

CME was invited to participate in the first of 10 regional Skills Summits hosted by the State Government, for industry leaders to workshop practical ideas to address the current and emerging workforce needs of the South West region.

Building on the success of the Perth Skills Summit in July, the Bunbury event in late August was attended by more than 40 business leaders, peak bodies, unions, government agencies and training representatives.  The Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Terry Healy MLA, provided the opening address and later gave an outline of how the outcomes from the Bunbury summit will help the State Government inform a local action plan to address the South West region’s specific skills needs.

Various suggestions were generated by the participants including assistance for disadvantaged learner drivers to gain their driver’s licence, improvements to regional bus routes to industrial sites, offering extensions to existing VISA holders to retain them in the country for longer if they wish to stay and work, and subsidising wages or accommodation for childcare workers to encourage women to re-enter the workforce.

HR professionals meet at new CME office

Human resources professionals working in member companies across the South West and Peel regions were invited to an HR Forum at CME’s new office in Bunbury on September 23.

The meeting featured a presentation from Amanda Hamilton and Liz Crompton from the Resources Industry Training Council on labour supply and demand, as well as VET in schools. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences in an informal setting.

The HR professionals that attended the meeting represented seven member companies including Doral, Albemarle, Simcoa, South32, Tronox, Iluka and Yancoal. After the meeting, the participants networked over a light lunch, while enjoying the garden views over Guppy Park.

The next HR Forum will be hosted by Tronox in January.
