Kimberley Regional Council meeting provides food for thought

North West Regional Officer Megan Brouwer travelled to Broome along with Acting Chief Executive Officer Rob Carruthers for the first Kimberley Regional Council meeting of 2022, held at Nyamba Buru Yawuru. Chief Executive Officer Nini Mills provided the group with a thought-provoking overview and historical timeline of Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NYB) and invited members to consider strategic partnerships with NYB.

Also accompanying Megan and Rob was Karleigh Barras, Workforce Development and Training Advisor for the Resources Industry Training Council (RITC), who provided a presentation to the group on labour market supply and demand.

Outside of the KRC, a number of stakeholder meetings were held during the visit to Broome. It was very exciting to hear about the new projects that are in the pipeline which will help to ensure the region continues to grow and diversify. Just as importantly, we heard about some of the current challenges for the region being experienced by both members and stakeholders, such as housing availability and juvenile crime.

Other highlights during the month of May included attending the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Women’s Leadership Forum (pictured above), while, back in the Pilbara, Megan attended the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Co-design workshop held in South Hedland.
