Regional Council takes in the culture of Broome

The Kimberley Regional Council (KRC) was held at the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) on August 25. The meeting was again well attended, with some new members joining us. It was an opportunity to hear from a range of stakeholders including the BCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sharni Foulkes who spoke to the new Kimberley Business Network, a tool developed to map the capability and capacity of local business to enable growth, opportunity, and development in the Kimberley. Stuart Pether, CEO of Kimberley Mineral Sands, who are relatively new members of the CME, provided an update on the Thunderbird Project.

There was also an update from the Kimberley Marine Support Base in relation to the appointment of Peterson Energy Logistics as the operator of the Kimberley Marine Offloading Facility in Broome. Following the meeting, the KRC was invited by Inpex to attend the Goolarri Media – A Taste of Broome Festival Music & Picture Show. Thank you to the team at Inpex for generously arranging this fantastic opportunity for the KRC to be immersed in the rich and vibrant culture and history of Broome.

CME North West regional officer Megan Brouwer participated in the Northern Australia Roundtable facilitated by The Hon Madeleine King MP in Karratha on August 17. The roundtable was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders and included industry representation from Woodside, Rio Tinto, BCI Minerals and Yara Pilbara Fertilisers. Information shared from the discussion will contribute to the National Jobs and Skills Summit, to be held on September 1-2.

De Grey Mining hosted Megan for a site visit during August. Nick Gajewski and Natalie Dakic from the community team arranged a tour of the camp, as well as a visit to the Hemi site to meet with the team from Topdrill and two of De Grey’s geologists, Matt Flambard and Martin Ash. De Grey Mining’s much anticipated pre-feasibility study is due for completion in September 2022. A huge thank you to all the team at De Grey and Topdrill for welcoming Megan to site and for sharing some of the exciting plans for the company.

On August 30, CME supported Child Australia in hosting an industry roundtable discussion focused on addressing the challenges of Early Childhood Education & Care (ECEC) throughout the Pilbara. The roundtable was attended by The Hon. Simone McGurk MLA, who spoke to current State Government initiatives and the challenges faced in the different regions, recognising there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. CME’s State Manager – Regional, Susan Cull, presented on the longstanding efforts of industry to support ECEC availability, affordability and sustainable in the region, and provided examples of the various initiatives that have been implemented by our members to try and address this issue.
