May 2021 has been another busy month for the Goldfields, starting with the Surface Mines Emergency Response Competition (SMERC), which returned after a year’s hiatus because of COVID-19. The event at Evolution Mining’s Mungari Operations was a great success, attracting nine teams from across the Goldfields to put their skills to the test in challenging and realistic event scenarios. Norton Gold Fields – Paddington was the overall winner, ahead of Northern Star South Kalgoorlie and Evolution Mining.
CME would like to thank the SMERC committee and Evolution Mining for the time and effort they put into making the competition possible, alongside the scenario event managers, adjudicators and volunteers. A big thank you also to Red Edge Events, our wonderful sponsors for their financial and in-kind donations, and to all of the competing teams.
During May, Kalgoorlie-Boulder also hosted the Goldfields Environmental Management Group Conference, which was attended by more than 350 delegates and 30 booth holders. You can read more about the conference in the Environment section of Discovery, but over three days delegates were treated to more than 40 presentations from environmental experts from across the nation. CME was delighted to sponsor and host a dinner as part of the conference.
Finally, the G E Business Register continues to grow and now has more than 250 businesses registered. The platform allows local businesses the opportunity to improve their visibility to suppliers and purchasers and to register as a supplier to the mining industry, and showcase their skills and capabilities to mining companies.
The Kalgoorlie Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KBCCI) is the dedicated resource looking after the Register, and will help Goldfield’s businesses sign up and answer any of their questions.
