CME facilitated a meeting for its South West members on November 3 at Main Roads WA in Bunbury, to discuss opportunities to supply alternative materials for the Bunbury Outer Ring Road (BORR) project, such as waste or demolition materials that could potentially be used for construction or fill.
The BORR is a 27-kilometre highway linking Forrest Highway to Bussell Highway. Detailed design for the $852 million project is currently underway and construction will start in early 2021, subject to environmental and heritage approvals being received.
Representatives from Main Roads WA and the South West Gateway Alliance, a consortium comprising Acciona, NRW Contracting, MACA Civil, AECOM and Aurecon, provided an overview of the project including the timeline, transport requirements and Main Road’s specifications for earthworks and pavements. Eleven members attended the meeting, together with CME’s South West Manager, Sharon Upston, and several staff from CME’s Perth office via teleconference.
Each of the members provided a summary of the materials they have available that could potentially be used for construction and fill, but also products that could be made available to assist the project, such as the Hexion dust suppressant that is manufactured in Dardanup.
Some of the materials that are surplus to requirements, have already been subjected to extensive scientific studies and testing and are stored in facilities in the South West and Peel regions, potentially making them an ideal alternative to traditional sand fill. Main Roads WA will conduct a detailed assessment of each company’s products to determine their suitability over the next few months.
Members that have material which could potentially be made available for the project, please contact Sharon Upston as soon as possible – s.upston@cmewa.com
