The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) has published information on its website to assist Western Australians in preparation for the new work, health and safety laws. The information that is published online is the most up-to-date content, with DMIRS intending to continue to add material as it becomes available. The developed educational content is introduced by a video message from the Minister for Industrial Relations, Stephen Dawson.
The published information includes an introduction and general overview of the Work, Health and Safety Act 2020 (WHS). This general overview covers health and safety duties and rights, worker representation and participation, key changes to enforcement, and many other topics.
DMIRS encourages employers, workers, and volunteer organisations to familiarise themselves with their obligations under the new laws.
The WHS Act is expected to come into force in January 2022. Until then, the current occupational, mines and petroleum safety legislation applies.
