The 2021 National Championship for the World Skills Competition was held in Perth last week. The competition enables apprentices and trainees from VET pathways – such as welding, motor mechanics, digital and technology skills, chefs, and construction trades – to put their skills on display and compete for a place in the Australian team.
The competition proceeded differently this year with inter-state competitors offered the opportunity to participate either online or within their home state. The National Skills team will then compete at the 2022 World Skills championships in Shanghai.

WA Skills Summit outcomes
The State Government Skills Summit took place on July 30 and provided an opportunity for participants to collectively discuss skills and training issues with government and propose resolutions. The event was attended by approximately 130 business leaders, peak bodies, unions, government agencies and training representatives, including CME CEO Paul Everingham.
Key topics of discussion included workforce mobility and the development of dedicated quarantine facilities, accelerated training opportunities, and workforce participation services and incentives (e.g., childcare).
The State Government has since announced a number of response measures including:
- The expansion of the State Nominated Migration Program.
- Introduction of a new WA Adult Apprentice Employer Incentive.
- The extension of the Apprentice and Traineeship Re-engagement Incentive.
- Development of a targeted advertising campaign to attract interstate and New Zealand skilled workers and under-represented groups.
- Review of the State Government infrastructure program.
- Driver’s licence attainment support for regional communities.
- Announced a proposal for a 1000-bed quarantine facility to be built in the Perth metro area.
The State Government is currently hosting Skills Summits in regional areas, with the South West Skills Summit taking place on August 30.
