The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA is delighted to see four of its member companies shortlisted for the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s 2021 Resources Sector Awards for Excellence.
The three shortlisted applicants for the Golden Gecko Award, recognising leading practice and innovation in environmental management, are all CME member companies.
Iluka Resources has been shortlisted for its “Flora Restorer”, a tractor-pulled piece of equipment that facilitates revegetation at the Eneabba mine site, while the Agnew hybrid renewable project – a collaboration between Goldfields Australia and EDL – is in the running for its ability to supply the off-grid mine site with an average of 50-60 per cent of its energy. Premier Coal is also on the shortlist for its tranformation of a former open cut coal mine outside of Collie into Lake Kepwari, a 100-hectare water body that is attracting thousands of visitors.
In the Community Partnership Resources Sector Award, which recognises outstanding achievements and leadership in building constructive community-resource industry partnerships, the Dandjoo Darbalung Program has been shortlisted. A collaboration between St Catherine’s College at UWA, CME member AngloGold Ashanti, IGO, Sanfire Resources and Barminco, the program provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with academic support, Indigenous culture support, wellbeing assistance, job preparation and mentoring.
CME Chief Executive Paul Everingham said the shortlisting reflected the mining and resources sector’s commitment to making important community contributions and implementing environmental best practice.
“The contributions of our sector touch every community around WA,” Mr Everingham said.

“Our member companies strive at all times to produce positive outcomes for the communities in which they operate. They also work extremely hard to achieve environmental excellence, whether that be through the transition to renewable energy or rehabilitation after an area is mined.
