Today’s release of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) report, Analysis of serious injury data in the Western Australian mining industry, July-December 2013, has been welcomed by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).
“New data analysis will assist the resources industry in continuous safety and health improvement efforts,” said CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith.
The activities identified in the report are consistent with areas where industry is already focused on improvement. Additionally, a number of these matters are under review by the Mining Industry Advisory Committee and the Council of Occupational Health and Safety to ensure new information on best practice can be shared across industry.
“Industry is committed to ensuring the safety and health of our workforce and will closely review these findings so that key lessons can be incorporated back on site,” said Mr Howard-Smith.
CME’s most recent Sharing Safety Lessons Learned Forum focused in particular on the vehicle and mobile plant interactions. CME expect future forums will focus on these key areas of risk.
CME will continue to engage with the DMP to share injury data and trends as well as information on near miss and serious incidents to ensure the resources sector can learn from past events.
“When it comes to safety there is absolutely no room for complacency. The resources sector will remain vigilant and work hard to ensure everyone gets home safe and well after finishing work,” said Mr Howard-Smith.
