Nominations are now open for the prestigious Women in Resources Awards for 2013, proudly presented by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).
CME Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith encouraged all WA resources companies to once again support the awards that showcase the important role played by women in the sector.
“It’s time for management and staff to take a look around their offices, mess halls, workshops and on-site to see which employees are making a positive impact in the resources sector,” Mr Howard-Smith said.
“Some women will feel they are simply doing their job or not worthy of recognition but they shouldn’t dismiss their achievements or the role they are playing as mentors.
“There are women achieving great things in the industry and we want to hear about them.
“It’s also an opportunity for companies to promote the innovative programs they have started which are attracting and retaining more women on their projects.
“Last year we saw some excellent company initiatives which have gone on to receive further accolades.”
Over the last five years CME research shows the number of women in employed in the resources sector has grown from 19 to 22 per cent of the total workforce.
“Women are increasingly choosing a career in the resources sector because it provides potential for career advancement, great pay, global travel and a work-life balance,” Mr Howard-Smith said.
“We expect to see even more women employed in the sector as we transition from the construction phase through to production.
The nominations will be judged by a panel convened by CME before the finalists are announced in early 2013.
The 2013 Women in Resources Awards will again feature a People’s Choice category where members of the public can vote for their favourite finalist via the CME website.
The categories are:
• Women in Resources Champion
Recognises an individual (male or female) who has encouraged, promoted and advocated for the attraction, selection, promotion or retention of women within the resources sector
• Outstanding Professional Woman
Recognises an outstanding contribution to the WA resources sector, her company and/or community and has significantly brought about positive change in the WA resources sector
• Outstanding Young Professional Woman
Identifies a young woman who has shown significant promise or reached new goals in their career in the resources sector
• Outstanding Operator/Technician/Trade Woman
Acknowledges an outstanding woman who has broken new ground for women in the resources sector
• Outstanding Company Initiative
Recognises a company that has implemented an initiative, policy or practice which demonstrates successful attraction, selection, promotion or retention of women within the resources sector
• People’s Choice Award

Winners of the Women in Resources Awards 2013 will be announced at a breakfast presentation ceremony on 8 March 2013 coinciding with International Women’s Day.
