WA students team up with WA’s resources sector

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) Inspiring Girls initiative is a unique careers event that showcases the resources industry to female secondary school students and inspires them to follow in the footsteps of Women in Resources Awards (WIRA) finalists and winners.

CME Chief Executive Paul Everingham said this year’s half-day career forum allowed the students to listen to inspiring presentations from WIRA finalists and winners, participate in hands-on resources related activities, take part in a ‘speed careering’ session and interact with industry representatives who love working in the resources sector.

“What we are trying to achieve with the Inspiring Girls initiative is to increase awareness of the range of diverse and exciting resources career pathways, as well as promote the benefits and opportunities for women working in the resources sector,” he said.

“CME is committed to promoting workplace diversity and promoting career opportunities for everyone.

“Inspiring Girls is just one example of the many initiatives resources companies support to raise awareness of career opportunities for students, and promote the industry and the skills it requires now and into the future.”

One of CME’s Women in Resources Awards 2019 finalists, Stephanie Allan, spoke to students about her role as an Operations Technician on the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project, one of the world’s largest LNG projects located on an A-class nature reserve.   She explained how she finds every day inspiring and loves the challenge of maintaining the facility, from time-critical breakdowns to complex planned maintenance.
