Resource Development and Sustainability

CME’s Resource Development and Sustainability team champions the responsible growth of Western Australia’s resources sector. They work to ensure that environmental, social, land access and heritage considerations are effectively integrated across the life cycle of resources and energy projects. Through comprehensive stakeholder engagement and evidence-based advocacy, the team supports members in achieving sustainable outcomes that benefit the environment, the sector and the community.

CME develops policy responses to key environmental, land access and heritage issues impacting the sector, including settings that support responsible resource development, project approvals, mine rehabilitation/closure, tenure and land access, native title and cultural heritage.

A core part of the team’s function is the preparation of detailed, research-driven submissions that articulate CME’s policy positions. These submissions represent member interests and make practical, forward-looking recommendations to both the Western Australian and Australian Governments. By influencing policy and regulatory frameworks, the team helps foster a stable and sustainable environment for resource development in WA.

Key focus areas

  • Improving the regulatory frameworks in WA to promote responsible resource development.
  • Ensuring regulatory assessment and approval processes are risk-based, fit-for-purpose and efficient
  • Supporting the development of workable settings that facilitate constructive partnerships between Traditional Owners, Native Title Parties, communities and industry.
  • Advocating for removal of regulatory duplication and promoting streamlined assessment processes
