About

Born and raised in Queensland, Rod began his career as a graduate mining engineer with Thiess. Joining BHP in 2011, he progressed through leadership positions before becoming General Manager of Jimblebar in 2018. His leadership philosophy, to hire and develop great people and create a great place to work, has guided a career defined by inclusion and results.

Rod is one of BHP’s most visible champions for inclusion, using his platform to challenge stereotypes and ensure women and under-represented groups have equal opportunities. Now General Manager of Newman Operations, he is driving measurable change in diversity, capability and culture. Under his leadership, female participation has increased by 6.5%, with 60% of the operational leadership team now women. He created residential employment pathways for Newman locals, leading to 36 new hires and a 275-person local talent pool. He also launched the Bamboo Program and Flex Centre, providing flexible work options for parents and carers.

Beyond statistics, Rod’s advocacy has reshaped workplace culture. He delivers open forums and “Ask Rod Anything” sessions that normalise conversation around inclusion, mental health and work-life balance. He mentors and sponsors female talent into leadership pipelines and ensures gender representation in all recruitment processes. His leadership has also inspired the replication of Newman’s diversity and flexibility programs across other BHP sites.
