About

Gold Fields’ Respectful Workplaces Program is strengthening how respect and inclusion are built into everyday workplace culture. Established in 2022, the program takes a proactive, prevention-based approach to stopping bullying, sexual harassment and disrespectful behaviour before it occurs. 

Centred on a flexible 10-module toolkit, the program equips senior leaders to hold values-based conversations with their teams, focusing on active listening, psychological safety, and understanding the difference between intent and impact. Since launch, there have been more than 15,000 participant engagements, with leaders across all Australian sites trained to embed respectful dialogue into daily operations. 

The program has contributed to tangible cultural change with leaders reporting greater confidence addressing challenging behaviours, and employees reporting they feel safer to speak up and supported when they do. This cultural shift has also contributed to improved retention of women, who now represent 26 per cent of Gold Fields’ workforce, up from previous years and tracking toward the company’s 2030 target of 30 per cent. 

Recognising its broader value, Gold Fields has shared the program with industry partners, who have adapted it for their own operations. Its success has also informed the WA Government’s Respect in Mining initiative and is now guiding rollout across Gold Fields’ global operations.
