Jemima Reid
Graduate Engineer · Barminco
About
Born in regional WA, Jemima’s early life was shaped by challenges that taught her resilience and determination. After losing her mother to cancer at 13, she immersed herself in study, earning academic and community awards. Her drive led to a scholarship at UWA, where she balanced four jobs while studying engineering.
Jemima discovered her passion for mining while volunteering at a Get Into Resources event and began her career with Barminco as an underground mining Graduate Engineer. She has worked across multiple operational and technical roles, developing knowledge of underground environments and a reputation for problem-solving. Her standout innovation with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics – a geotechnical modelling app that generates 3D cave-back models in two minutes, replacing an 8–12-hour manual process – has improved accuracy, efficiency, and safety. Jemima presented her work at the 2024 MassMin Conference in Sweden and was published in Mass Mining Proceedings.
Jemima’s contribution extends far beyond her technical work. As President of the UWA-AusIMM Student Chapter, she doubled sponsorship and membership, organised over 20 events, and chaired the 2022 National Mining Games. She has served on AusIMM’s New Leaders Advisory Committee every year since and contributed to curriculum development through the University Industry Panel. Passionate about mentoring, she also supports rural students through Wheatbelt and Beyond Youth Mentoring.
