Sarah Sutherland

About

Beginning her career in biomedical science in London, Sarah returned to Western Australia during the mining boom and joined Worsley Alumina, where she discovered her passion for metallurgy. Determined to build a long-term career, she completed postgraduate studies at the WA School of Mines and went on to work across alumina, copper, gold, and iron ore operations, developing broad technical expertise through laboratory, pilot plant and site-based roles.

Now a Testwork Engineer with Metso, Sarah has become a visible advocate for diversity in STEM. In 2025 she designed and launched MetsosteM, a hands-on school outreach program that introduces Year 9 students to real-world mining innovation. The initiative has already had a significant impact across regional schools and is now being considered for national deployment as a model for industry-led STEM engagement. Sarah also collaborates with universities and youth organisations to promote early-career pathways, with a focus on inspiring more girls to pursue engineering, metallurgy and technical trades.

Her advocacy is deeply personal and practical. As a neurodivergent woman in resources, she has normalised open discussions around mental health, learning differences and inclusion at work. She mentors young engineers and graduates within Metso and the broader industry, helping them navigate challenges and build confidence in technical environments still lacking female representation.
